Abigail is the victim in the play because Proctor took advantage of her and had the affair when he was older and wiser and knew it was wrong. He gave her false hope by teaching her new things and being her first sexual encounter so she thought they could some day be together. Abigail makes this clear when she says on page 24, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men! And now you bid me tear the light out of my eyes? I will not, I cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet!”
The women are made the victims of the play again as a ridiculous number of them are being accused of witchcraft and sentenced to jail or worse, hanged. “Is it true? There be fourteen women arrested?” “No, sir. There be thirty-nine now.” Accusing that many women is foolish and shows they are just randomly picking people to point the finger at because they want to believe there really are witches causing all the madness.
